First Appearance of HYDRA
That title probably doesn’t mean much to many people anyone, but it just made my entire fucking day.
I just bought the issues of Strange Tales from 135 to 144. Old school 60’s classics. Within these hallowed, and tissue-y, papers are the first appearances of HYDRA and The Fixer and Mentallo. HYDRA is the evil organisation of the Marvel Universe (616, represent). Fixer and Mentallo are some of the earliest stooges of this criminal empire.
I am a huge HYDRA fan, I can’t even explain why. Their name rocks, all capitals even thought it is not an acronym. The uniform is pretty pimp, green with a bright H across the front. Hooded goons with buggy eyes and a death oath to the corporation. Madame Hydra, clearly the hottest cartoon babe since Judy Jetson. HYDRA just want to take over the planet, and they know they can because “cut off one limb and two more will take its place.” Hail HYDRA!
They’ve never been able to make it big time, always getting foiled by that no-good, meddling Nick Fury. But you have to give them top marks for…I don’t know…inventiveness. A death spore bomb, an overkill horn, and hey, they were responsible for Spider-Woman, that wasn’t a bad idea, just poor execution.
I’ve got a feeling that HYDRA can be more, and I damn well want to prove it. I have come up with an idea for a Marvel series that would revolve around an agent in HYDRA. He’s not all bad, so there would be enough for people to connect with, but there would also be a look into the eye of the storm. An insight into what makes these guys tick. I would find it fascinating…but will others?
I hope so, because I really want to claim these comics on my tax return as work research.
