What A Difference A Day Makes…when multiplied by 5

Everything seems to be whizzing by so fast, it’s insane. Work is keeping me busy, I have just finished one English unit to teach, about expositions, and now I have to finish another one based around comprehension, this is because I have now ‘volunteered’ to be on a special literacy committee at school.

I have about 18 different reporting spreadsheets to create during the next week, and I am just cowering in front of the thought of it all.

I just had a kid come back from suspension and he lasted just under two hours before landing in an altercation. And another two and a half before the next one. Fun!

Had to attend a staff dinner, and couldn’t drink. Lame!

Not to mention the good stuff. Minotaur package came, latest issues of Batman, Avengers: The Initiative, Logan, Resurrection, The Boys, Casanova and Criminal. Essentials trade of Iron Fist. eBay yielded a Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. trade which has his Strange Tales gigs from issue 150-168. I am also waiting on the Kirkman Cap trade, and the first four Brubaker Cap trades, yes it has been a big eBay week.

I’m still reading The Ruins, which over halfway is a very cool story. Kinda Jordy Verrill meets The Beach, ha. I’m reading the Greatest Spider-Man and Daredevil Team Ups trade over breakfast, and I just watched the latest episode of LOST. Matthew Fox is so good at conveying pain in Jack. He really needs to get some big screen gigs, and not just Speed Racer. This last episode provided me with what may be my happiest and saddest Jack moments, and all in 42 minutes.

Then there’s the writing. I have planned all four issues for the mini of my new stolen awesome idea. I am officially taking these days off, so that when I go through the notes on the weekend with my brother I can attack them fresh and objectively. But, I still think I kicked ass on them.

Last thing, I have been teaching narrative in class. Similes, adjectival phrases, metaphors, adverbial phrases, personification, adverbial phrases first, idiom; it’s all good; ten year olds will get it, right? And I am modelling an example of how to brainstorm quick ideas, characters and a story. I come up with some notes in Word and show them through the data projector, and then quickly write an orientation in front of them. I am trying to show them that it is not perfect, but I am trying to get everything that I mentioned before in there and tell a story off the top of my head that is pseudo-interesting. Then the story flows.

The Trials of Bobsy McMilko’ forms on the screen. I throw in some stuff to make the kids laugh, always important, but also try to show them that all the conventions I taught them can be incorporated, if planned properly and you have to just slightly think ahead.

I have now decided to continue the story, I have heaps of ideas for Bobsy and his lil sis Chocky, and their battles against the Knuckle Gang; Patty O’Brien, Shirley Noodle and Mack MacGarnickle. I might even post some here. I have written the first two pages, and am going to try to update new pages every so often and have them displayed on the wall outside the classroom. Anything to keep work fun really.

Real last thing, I’m listening to The Platters. Greatest line ever!

Heavenly shades of night are falling.

  1. Great article! thanks. And if you like idioms you should check this page outhttp://www.k-international.com/french_idiomsIt gives a list of French idioms with their English translations - really shows how funny language is out of context (and what a nightmare it can be to translate languages!). :-)
