stinkcasts or podbrowns…
I haven’t decided what I would call my own podcast, hell, I don’t even know what I would talk about…hmm…anyway…I am a big podcast fan. I just dig the shit out of free online content that you can keep. What can I say, I must have some Hebrew in me…jokes.
Anyone who hasn’t downloaded iTunes yet should click the link and get it now. I was sceptical at first, but for the iTunes Store alone it is well worth it. As cool as it is to buy songs and such, and not to mention audio books and other cool stuff, it is the podcasts that have me at hello. I know heaps of people use downloading software to get songs for free, but I just don’t trust it, it’s too easy to download bad files and screw your computer up, and for someone who relies on my computer so hardly for all my writing and stuff I don’t wanna take the risk; call me crazy.
Now that you’ve downloaded iTunes, go to the iTunes Store and browse around. I am currently subscribed to thirteen active and producing podcasts, not to mention some other ones that have cool little things. Oh, did I mention that they are FREE!?!? You just click to download and you get it, no strings. You can even subscribe and when you open iTunes the software automatically looks to see if there is any new content to be downloaded, and then downloads it. You don’t even have to look anymore, it’s all automated, awesome. But, for no other sake than to be even more of a nerd, here are the podcasts I absolutely live by. I listen to them nearly every week and have already listened to hours worth.
1. SModcast
Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, usually, sit back and shoot the shit. They just chat about whatever comes to mind. But this is not boring at all, for two reasons. A) They discuss it with an open sense of humour that could only come from the guys who brought us Chasing Amy, and B) they just talk about good shit. Drunken shenanigans, fathers having babies to their daughters, shark attacks, gay bars and all things nerd. It’s hilarious, with many laugh out loud moments. I really dig this shit; but I am an unashamed Smith fan, and Mosier is funny as hell in his own right.
2. Word Balloon
Radio host John Siuntres interviews all the names from the comic industry. You get a real insight into the minds of a lot of great writers and artists, from now and before now, but not yet after now. Siuntres is very well spoken and funny; he gets the conversations moving, but keeps them going while always letting the star of each episode roll with their own ideas. They discuss comics, but also movies and just the business in general. It is so interesting to hear the voices of these writers and how they do it, and why. I would love to be on this one day. For a supernerd like me, this is essential listening.
3. The Official LOST Podcast
Darlton (am I that much of a nerd…?) Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, two producers on the show, discuss each episode, just after it airs, and prehash each coming week’s episode. They then take fan’s questions, as well as putting forward their own lame jokes and witty banter. I think LOST is the greatest show ever made, and it is nice to see that at least two people, well three because of BKV, involved are also genuine and funny guys. This podcast gives up some serious information, but also is just a pleasure to listen to.
4. Creative Screenwriting Magazine
This is where Jeff Goldsmith, senior editor of the magazine, interviews screenwriters after watching their new films. He is like Siuntres in that he keeps things going smoothly, but gives the interviewees enough rope to hang themselves. It is nice to hear from the screenwriters because normally it is the actors, and maybe now the directors, but the guy in the dark room smashing his laptop getting the words out is often overlooked, so I like to check in and hear what they have to say. I may not plan on watching Hostel Part 2 but it was worth listening to Eli Roth rant about people that don’t like gorno and also hear him give the Thanksgiving trailer voiceover. “White meat, dark meat, all will be carved. Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving, you’ll be coming home; in a body bag. Thanksgiving, coming to a cinema, near you, this April.”
These podcasts all help me do my exercise, go running, ride my bike to work and still keep my sanity. I would be truly lost without them.
Did I mention that they’re free?
