Engagement Present

The girl gets a rock on a ring, but what does the guy ever get in the engagement process. In my case, I got her one hell of a stone, so I was happy that I got something in return.

I thought long and hard about it, what did I need.
I have a good laptop.
I have a good bike.
I have a great bbq.
I have clothes and I don’t wear jewellery, I will acquiesce when I wear that one band come that one day.
I have a great, new car.
What did I need? Or Want?
I love my dvd’s, but I don’t feel the need to own a massive tv, most of the time I kick back and view on the laptop.
Then I knew what I wanted. I wanted carte blanche, just for a small amount of money. A pretty small percentage in comparison. I asked and it was approved, as I always knew it would be. I had struck a blow for mens’ rights across the world. I was victorious.

I only took a few hundred dollars, much less than was approved. I made my order, on the wwInterweb, and I sat back to wait. I am consistently pleased with Amazon, their work always arrives well packaged and before they estimate it will. The package was dropped off and I was literally giddy with delight. My heart was busting a nut and I bounced around the house. It even arrived on a Friday, what better way to end the week?

I didn’t open it straight away. I loosed the brown box from the white hessian bag and sat it on the futon in my office. Then I put my work objects away and did some exercise. I loved every moment of that anticipation. It was worth every second, and the best thing was, I had forgotten exactly what I had ordered, so I knew I would have some surprises in store for me.

Then I opened the box and lined them all up like a pretty little chorus line, sweet Virginia!
the man's engagement present
This was what I wanted, a massive stack of books. It was something that would make me smile more than any compressed coal ever could. These were things I wanted, thought about, but could never get the money up to purchase, or would have to take months/years to slowly amass, or simply could not get on my little island country. Not even in Borders!

The two X-Men monsters cover the entire Joss Whedon and John Cassaday opus that was Astonishing X-Men. I have heard so many awesome things that I knew I would get it eventually. Here is my chance to smash them both in quick succession.

I have wanted to read Brian K Vaughan’s The Hood for quite some time but have never been able to get it, and certainly not for a good price. BKV just might be up there in my top five authors of all time. Yes, he is that good.

Jonathan Hickman’s The Nightly News is meant to be a phenomenal work of comic literature that is presented in such a different manner by the graphic designer. By the description I think my lady might even read that one too.

I loved the first trade of Jason Aaron’s Scalped. Another comic that shows that tights and tits aren’t all that the four-colour page is about. Sometimes good writing is simply good writing, and I don’t care if it’s on the big screen, over years on HBO or on the drawn page. I likes me a good story and will track it down wherever I can.

Secret Invasion was the one massive nerd-out crossover that I was simply curious to read. I had heard a lot about it and I wanted to see how it stood up. I generally don’t read all the top-selling comics with Avengers and X-Crews everywhere. I’m not exactly Mr Retro-Indie-Pulp, but I like some more subversive stuff than the average fanboy, so I thought getting this piece of Marvel historic cheese might have been up my alley.

Proof was another little series that I love the concept of and really got into the first trade, so the second one here should tide me over for a little while longer.

Then the novel, I have been trying to get the other Duane Swierczynski novels all year but they are nowhere on my rock. So Amazon it had to be. Included here are The Wheelman and Severance Package, and Secret Dead Men is coming later, in its own little box.

The last two novels are from Joe Hill, Stephen King’s little boy. But, I haven’t bought them simply for that connection. I have bought them for two reasons; one, I have heard good things through reviews and awards they/he have won, and mostly, I like the dude’s blog. He has a good voice, and some great taste, so with trust in that I am putting down a few pennies to try his first novel, and his first short stories.

I hope to slowly chew through these over the holidays. I cannot wait to slowly get them into me and hopefully love them all. This is what I wanted for my engagement. This is the sort of simple pleasure I can be sated with. Should be a fun marriage.
