Just An Idea
As I wrote about earlier, DC has a new experiment called Wednesday Comics. The comic is a broadsheet newspaper and each page is one page of a character’s story, there are 15 characters with their own pages. It’s pretty bad ass, to know more of what I think go back one entry and stretch out.
Now, my idea is, and I’m sure someone’s working on it already…have Marvel pretty much steal the idea and go for gold. I would buy the Marvel one if I could, but left with only one option I will take the DC version, purely because I believe in this format. It’s the most fun I’ve had with a book in ages. And I likes me my reading to be fun!
So here are my wishes suggestions for what Marvel should will could do:
Daredevil written by Duane Swierczynski and drawn by Leinil Francis Yu
I know, maybe I’m just projecting some of my favourite creators onto my favourite character, but I think Swierczynski could so some kick ass work with Matt Murdock, Dakota North and S.H.I.E.L.D. I would literally kill for a chance to read this page as I know it could be created.
Nick Fury written by Damon Lindelof and drawn by Mike Perkins
Lindelof could add all sorts of layers to Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. and bring in an ensemble including, but not limited to Dum-Dum Dugan, Maria Hill, Tony Stark (but never as Iron Man) and a patched Wolvie in a suit. Perkins can make with the Steranko-style like no one else, so it’s a perfect match!
Iron Fist written by Brian K Vaughan and drawn by David Aja
Aja is an easy option, but hey, sometimes the best work. Vaughan could bring a lot of Danny Rand through and only do it using one page at a time. This would be awesome with a capital fuck yeah.
Frank Kafka written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Sean Phillips
The comic within a comic from Criminal. This makes so much sense that I would sell the whole venture to Quesada based on this alone. And he’d have to buy it, because everyone loves Frank Kafka and you know the creators would jump at this chance.
Doctor Strange written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Frank Miller
This teaming, on this character, could be the greatest thing to ever happen to Stephen Strange since he got the Eye of Agamotto. If no Frank Miller, then go for David Mazzuchelli, if he’s still rolling around.
Spider-Woman written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Alex Maleev
Why? Because sometimes you have to put a current plug in there, and it might as well be this one. Maleev looks to be dominating the Jessica Drew art so far, so I’m all for more of it.
Iron Man written by Jonathon Hickman and drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz
Hickman could add some real world info and intel to the man in the iron suit. Sienkiewicz could draw it like no one has seen before, and the bad guys Hickman came up with would look creepy and stellar.
Spider-Man written by Dan Slott and drawn by Skottie Young
The perfect Peter Parker for everyone to get behind. Slott makes with the funny like no one else lately, and Skottie Young could bring an aesthetic that would make Spidey’s addition not so completely generic and calculated.
Wolverine written by Joss Whedon and drawn by Chris Bachalo
It would be a brooding Wolvie but not in a bloody world. He’d have some young girl around him, take your pick from Kitty Pryde, Jubilee, Dazzler, etc. Bachalo’s art is nice and would suit a strip, and Whedon could nail the ironic side of Logan.
Tales of Asgard Featuring Thor written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Marko Djurdjevic
From what these two have done and can do with the character, need I say more.
Tomb Of Dracula written by Joe Hill and drawn by Mitch Breitweiser
Joe Hill knows how to make with the scary, his books, comic series and pedigree show that. Breitweiser would add a very distinct flavour to the tales that would set them apart for sure.
Fantastic Four written by Steve Niles and drawn by Phil Hester
Just because I think this would be interesting. Steve Niles could spin the FF into something more than it ever seems to be.
There you go, Marvel, thank me for it later. Or just give me the chance to pen my own page as well. How does a nice Black Tarantula page suit you, with art assists from Clay Mann. I’d have Carlos LaMeurta tracking down a serial killer, someone leaving behind brutal yet intricate crimes. It would be dark NYC but with LaMeurta bumping into some random help from a few old faves. In the end, a great twist and a launching point for a new character.

Some really great ideas here! The Frank Kafka idea is pure genius.
The only one I disagree with is Jason Aaron on Dr. Strange. I love Aaron’s work, but I’d rather have someone else do Dr. Strange. Get JMS on the line to write this section, and it would amend a lot of things with him.
As for Aaron, I would put him up for Iron Fist, since BKV is probably not likely to come back for Marvel anytime soon.
Also, I’m not really digging a lot of Slott’s current work with Spidey, he makes him sound too asshole-ish.
Instead, I’d have Paul Tobin, who writes Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, or Jeff Parker, from Agent of Atlas, for the Spider-Man strip.
That’s the spirit, now we’re getting some back and forth going. I am fine with some interchange. Yeah, not sure BKV would actually be in, but I’d ask him, ha. If he had to drop LOST (best show ever) then he sounds like he might be busy.
I figured Jason Aaron for Dr Strange because he could bring something gritty to it, yet still have that Ghost Rider strangeness to it. I’d like to read that, at least.
If you don’t like Slott, that’s cool, I haven’t been religious on keeping up with Spidey, that sounds fine to swap over, I think Jeff Parker is awesome!
True, Aaron could completely own Iron Fist, that is a good audible to play at the line as well,
See, this is fun, like a little Marvel Fantasy league, haha!
As for Frank Kafka, I did see it mentioned on Twitter somewhere before, may have been Andy Diggle, so I won’t profess complete genius for that one, but I did choose to keep the collaborators, haha.
Blowing nitrogen into her hairy clam is gold!!!!!! I’d give her the mother of all pearl necklaces!!!!!
Marvel Fantasy league could be intriguing!!!!
List your top ten Marvel Characters then send it on. All characters start on 10 points.
The next person adds a point to their fav character and subtracts from the character they could do without. And keep passing it on.
I don’t lknow I’m just spit balling here, I know I’m just the sherriff and don’t know nothing!!!!
[...] put together a list of what I thought Marvel should do with their own version of Wednesday Comics, here it is again. Now Matt has done his, and other people are adding to it on the comments thread, kinda like some [...]
I like it!!! Nick Fury!! Gimme gimme. Failing that, Mitch and I could trade places!
Mike, I would love to see you get to draw this sort of massive page thing, after seeing some of your page layouts I know you could really add something different.
But if you want Tomb of Dracula, that’s fine by me.
Joss Whedon is a great director, most of the science fiction series that i love are created by him..`.
