Soap – The Short Flick
It was a while ago that I came up with what I thought would be a nifty little idea for a short story. It was a bout a guy who had OCD and it caused him to have to wash his hands every hour on the hour. The complication of the story would be that he would get stuck in a bank robbery and then…well, I didn’t exactly know what would happen next. It was more a premise, a concept, than it was a fully fleshed out story. I started it but it was never completed, it just sits in my short story folder, Ellery Queen, and doesn’t do much for the world.
My brother was always a fan of the idea and not that long ago he said we should write it as a short flick script. We back and forthed it and it didn’t take long to get it done, it’s only about 8-9 pages. I honestly couldn’t even tell you who wrote which words, it’s been between us that many times. It’s been a fun process of collaboration considering we live a few thousand kilometres apart. Once the script was completed to our satisfaction my brother sent it out to some people in that industry, he’s already had an award winning short film made so he’s the connection there, not me.
We had some bites on the hook, but nothing revolutionary. Nibbles, no big fish. Then this week we got a motivated mover. A guy who’s produced another short recently and looking to do another. He has a plan and he wants to make it happen. And we’re happy to let him. The paperwork is in motion and it’s nice to know that our writing isn’t complete garbage. Someone else out there appreciates it.
When it will get made I do not know, and how it will turn out is anybody’s guess, but it sure is nice to see the little baby of ours step out the front gate and search into the new world.
May the journey be safe.
