Marvel House Ads

Thinking about these house ads made me remember that I have two others stored in my computer, ‘cos I’m a bower nerd (geddit‽) and that’s how I roll. So for your pleasure, two more ads from deep within the way back machine.

First up, for your amusement and delight we have a house ad for a book that to my knowledge never actually hit the stands. But it would have been an absolute ripper. I give you, Roger Stern and Frank Miller’s Doctor Strange (I just hope one person out there is like, yeah, Roger Stern!).

Yeah, that one splash is about as cool as it gets. I’m not even the most massive Miller fan, but you have to give it up to him, before he became a caricature of a stereotyped version of his own funhouse mirror reflection the dude could draw. This sort of pic would look great on a wall, and it only gets greater when you realise and absolutely know that you’d have no chance of getting a Strange pic out of Miller now. I wonder what did happen to this book, anyone? The best you can do is lean in real close to the screen right now and smell in that old comic smell, don’t worry, I scripted it into this page. Go on, sniff around.

Iron Fist is awesome, and broke the fourth wall well before that Deadpool clown ever came along. I mean, c’mon, Iron Fist started with stories in the second person, he was drawing us all in from the start, how did we never see it?

I like this ad because it’s something that only way back Marvel could do and pull off. Though, if Swierczynski pulled this stunt now, and I think the book needs it, I’d completely back him on it.

I found this ad that uses the villainous supporting cast from Daredevil. Seems like a kind of strange ploy to use to sell a deal, but watching Turk struggle while Kingpin oversees, and you know Bullseye isn’t going to miss with that pie. Hmm, I wonder if anyone has ever written a Bullseye pie throwing gag before. I am so going to do it, when the time comes. I wonder what other sales campaigns Turk attached himself to over time, haha.

Then there’s Bruce Lee…sorry, I mean Shang Chi, and his wicked sunburn. Looks like he’s about to fight a tournament in an oven, poor bastard, hope he rehydrates. But otherwise it’s a wicked little ad. It’s not the best book, but I’m not asking for it back, I just like the composition and colour of the ad, seriously.

The Thing needs a gridiron helmet? That bad boy better be an authentic replica for aesthetic purposes or else that’s just poor research.

There need to be more Marvel vampire books. Way more of them. Though I don’t know how one with ‘photos’ will go. Vampires cannot be committed to film, jeez, where’s the Marvel ad research department?

And what may be the best for last; they announce that the DD V Spidey quarrel will be bouncier than ever…hang on, bouncier. I’m out of here. I can’t top that.

Today’s ads just don’t have this edge, or am I just pining for my youth? Everyone always thinks their youth was the best. Except baby boomers, theirs sucked.

  1. No, your youth was the best in terms of comics ads. Today’s just can’t compare. I’m envious. I would read EVERYTHING here because of the ads.

  2. Yay, Roger Stern!

I remember a couple of other classic PM & IF ads like that (also by Sienkiewich) and some cool Moon Knight ads from him too.

  3. Iambic - Yeah, I would probably pick these titles up, they are pretty cool ads. Seems we’ve lost that touch over time.

Rol - glad for the Stern love, haha. I’d love to find more of Sienkiewicz’s ads from that period, might do a little Googlin’ for it right now. Ha, just had a thought, imagine a new techno-cool Creedence - Keep On Googlin’
