The Savage Axe Of Ares – Get Pumped
I’ve been excited for The Savage Axe Of Ares for a few months now. I was excited based on the title alone and the fact that it’s another 48 page b&w anthology just like they used to do in the good old days. This alone was going to get my money, but now we have more information.
The previous Marvel attempts at this style have been mixed in success with Wolverine, Shang Chi, Iron Man and Doctor Strange all getting a go. Some stories were stellar, some were just okay, none were out and out terrible, though I was never happy with the covers used. But now we have this cover come April.
Yeah, that cover dominates.
Then we have the creators behind it all; Gregg Hurwitz, John Barber, Ted McKeever, and Duane Swierczynski. That’s one damn fine gritty list. Hurwitz has come off stuff like The Punisher, McKeever gave up the best Doctor Strange story from his anthology last month, and Swierczynski is one of my favourite writers in any medium, so that all looks great. I haven’t read an Barber before, but I’ll be keen to give it a go. Not much is said about the stories, but Swierczynski has mentioned that his story is a 2,500 word prose piece titled ‘Wojna’ which is a historical noir tale set in medieval Poland. To me, that sounds insanely cool. I like the denser text pieces in the comic as it adds to the whole reading experience.
I’m keen for this title like nothing else. I am only saddened that May and June do not include any solicits in this style at all. I hope Marvel do go back to it at some stage. It seems to sell just outside of the top 100 but they’re using mid-level talent from the Marvel pool so surely it is cost effective and has received some critical acclaim.
I hope many will try this comic, if they haven’t tried any of the previous anthologies, and I hope you like it, too.
Until then, enjoy some sample pages below and click this link for a Marvel interview with Gregg Hurwitz and Duane Swierczynski.
