Electicisms 27/10/2010
It’s been a big week back at work. Lame. So on with the chlorophyll.
Eclectic Musing – I’ve been pondering the January solicitations. Be prepared. It’s looking to be a big month for comics for me.
Eclectic Purchase – Secret Avengers #6 – I dug the Max Fury one shot last time, but this arc kicks off and promises some Shang-Chi as well as some Prince of Orphans. It’s an espionage fu tale that seems right in my wheelhouse of pleasure. Lock it in.
Eclectic Musing – Come this January I’ll be purchasing two Ultimate titles. I feel like I’ve let myself down.
Eclectic Musing – But I’ll be right in a thick of a Mark Millar comic, so I guess the slippery slope started a while ago.
Eclectic Musing – I am so keen for Captain America: Hail HYDRA. Who doesn’t love HYDRA? And it’s $2.99. That’s so full of awesome I’m surprised there’s not a warning.
Eclectic Musing – Beauty and the Geek is just kind of cruel. Everyone comes off poorly, everyone is being judged. They’re all the bottom pile of life, just one pile gets humped more than the other.
Eclectic Musing – Daredevil: Reborn starts. Am I just a glutton for punishment?
Eclectic Musing – I wish I was on a company mailing list. That would be the most awesome.
Eclectic Link – The Weekly Crisis for solid comic reviews, news, commentary, and what have you.
Eclectic Musing – I’m still not picking up many comics except from Marvel. It’s not even intentional, just what interests me.
Eclectic Purchase – Black Widow #7 – Duane Swierczynski just took over this title last month, and his crime fu was strong in that debut so I can only hope he’ll keep up the solid tale in this issue, the middle part of Kiss or Kill.
Eclectic Musing – I always want Swierczynski to knock it out of the park, but he hasn’t really done that, until last issue of Black Widow. I hope he does so for the full three issue arc.
Eclectic Musing – Though, after this is the Hawkeye & Mockingbird crossover, Widow Maker, and instead of being between the two titles it will now come out as a mini event type thing with an extra dollar on each title. Best way to get both ongoings cancelled, I feel.
Eclectic Link – My CBR Reviews – I always have fun writing these bylines and worry no one is reading them.
Eclectic Musing – You know what? I still walk up to my baby boy and check to see if he’s making a sound. I am such a cliche. But I’m still not MacLaine in the start of Terms of Endearment. I will never be that…will I?
Eclectic Musing – Just read Tomb of Terror from Marvel. Damn, they really nail that random horror vibe by making everything feel existential and not overplayed. If only the Creepy relaunch had been able to do that.
Eclectic Purchase – Incognito: Bad Influences – My favourite title from 2009 is back. I am pleased. I am extremely pleased. But I don’t want to jinx it, so I’ll just wait and tell you how awesome it is next week.
Eclectic Musing – If the second arc of Incognito is good it could take a run at Sleeper as my favourite Brubaker series of all time. That’s very big talk.
Eclectic Link – thoughtballoons – We’re in the middle of Ben Grimm week. I Feel like I’ve stepped outside the boundaries of the character and really tried something out.
Eclectic Musing – Brubaker’s Batman was okay. Not amazing, or at least what I’ve read of it, but five issues for $7.99 is a steal.
Eclectic Musing – I wonder what everyone’s favourite issue of Daytripper would be…
Eclectic Purchase – Jonathan Hickman Double Bill: Fantastic Four #584 and Secret Warriors #21 – I always like the week where these two books ship. I wouldn’t say both titles have been at the top of their game lately but I have been enjoying them so I’ll gladly add these to the purchase list for this week.
Eclectic Musing – As much as everyone raves about Hickman, I feel like he’s cruised through this year on reputation alone. His FF has slowly been declining, sadly, and Secret Warriors was great during Wake The Beast but The Last Ride…just didn’t grab me. SHIELD opened damn strong but has yet to cap me in as a true believer. People talkl of his as the best writer of the year, I have my doubts.
Eclectic Musing – Don’t get me wrong, Hickman’s been damn good, better than many, but not the best.
Eclectic Link – Gestalt Mash for my comic gonzo and Top Horror Flick countdown.
Eclectic Musing – Watching the first few seasons of Scrubs, as they’re on tv, in the background, reminds me how potent some of those earlier scripts really were. Watching JD and Elliott hook up and blow up in the one episode has to be the strongest ep of the show, easily, and one of the best of any show.
Eclectic Purchase – Thunderbolts #149 – The second tie-in issue to Shadowland, of two such issues, and the first one was massively strong. I don’t generally pick up this title but it was great so I’m in for the second part. Looking forward to more Crossbones and Man-Thing action.
Eclectic Musing – Man, just thinking about Crossbones makes me want to go back and read Streets of Poison all over again. I have all the issues. Mayhap I will.
Eclectic Musing – I got all the issues for SoP from my brother, except one was missing, he never had it. I finally went to a con, Supanova in Sydney, and tracked that issue down for a few bucks. Totally worth it.
Eclectic Purchase – Kill Shakespeare #6 – This series has been solidly enjoyable for me so far. It might not be perfect, and some characterisation could be improved, but overall it’s good clean fun. People need to spent their money on good clean fun.
Eclectic Musing – I want to write a webcomic about all of the best PI’s and noir grizzlers together at the start of school. I’ll call it Noir Elementary.
Eclectic Musing – Imagine a little Continental Op working both sides of the canteen and Sam Spade falling for the teacher. It’s golden.
Eclectic Purchase – Incorruptible #11 – I’m still liking this series. It’s a bit different and surprisingly good for it. But I do want more Jailbait in it. You can’t have enough Jailbait.
Eclectic Musing – Parker: The Outfit just turned up in the mail. Why, hello…
Eclectic Musing – I’m going to be doing some research into the best single issues of all time. If you have any suggestions please drop them below in the comments.

Not content to rip me off, you’re doing it on the same day my Random Thoughts go up? (Sure, I didn’t write them this week, but whatever…)
And Incognito is good, but not the best thing Brubaker’s written. Not the best thing he’s written for Phillips. Not the best thing he’s written for Phillips and published through Icon.
Chad, if I could rip you off at the exact same minute I would…because I’m sure this is strong contest for your column, ha!
As for Incognito, I’m not saying it’s the best thing he’s ever written, yet, but i know I damn well loved Incognito last year. I believe Sleeper is still better but give Incognito a few more goes and it may amass more, in my eyes.
I also think it’s the best thing he’s published through icon, though maybe tied withthe Bad Night arc of Criminal which was insanely good.
