Previously, On CBR – Robert E Howard’s Savage Sword #1 Review

Man, I always loved those Savage Sword of Conan magazines from way back in the day. Sprawling black and white art, dense text pieces, fantastic sword and sorcery epics. They were just afternoons asking to be spent immersed in brilliant fiction and fun. I love a good package that makes you really want to set aside everything else and just enjoy. That’s what these magazines were to me.

Now, Dark Horse has picked up the mantle and will start printing new magazines very similar to this format. They’ll use Robert E Howard characters as the base and they use vibrant colour, text pieces, reprints of some old stories to take us on a nostalgic trip. It’s an exciting premise but it also filled me with dread. I bought the first issue of the newly released Creepy as well and it wasn’t so good. This had every opportunity to be the same.

I am glad to say Savage Sword is actually better than I thought it would be. It’s got some good new stories, a fine text piece, and the reprint of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s Worms of the Earth is completely worth buying. This package is bang for your buck and it will take you a while to get through it, which is appreciated. Hit the link to read:

Robert E Howard’s Savage Sword #1 review by Ryan K Lindsay

See why I think, ““Savage Sword” is a near perfect collection of what makes Robert E Howard a master creator in his field and his creations the perfect fodder for atmospheric and brutal comics. This captures the nostalgia of what made these old magazines define childhood discovery but it also updates and makes this collection something that you must own if you are a fan of the genre. The gamble has worked and will pay off for us all as we see a new dawn of savage tales of our favorite barbarians and warriors.
