The Package – A True Story
A package was sent to my house this week. This was my wife’s response.
The package was addressed to our son. It’s his first birthday in a few days, it makes sense he’d be getting something in the mail. The sender’s name was my wife’s name, or so it would appear. Upon seeing what she thought was her name on a package sent to her son which she didn’t send, my wife’s mind started to reel a little. She couldn’t work out how this could be, then she understood completely.
My wife assumed this package, a present to our son, was actually sent to the house by another version of her from an alternate reality. Why did this other version of her need to send packages through impossible means to our son? Well, this other wife/mother knew she had to send packages to our son in this reality because he would be without a mother soon. My wife just realised she was going to die, and probably before our son’s birthday and that was why another version of herself from a different reality was going to be nice and send packages from ‘her’ to our son for the rest of his motherless life.
My wife then freaked a little at the thought of dying within the next 36-72 hours.
Now, the truth is that my wife’s name, when boiled down to an initial and a surname, is the same as my brother’s. You can now see the coincidental confusion. My wife did and so knows she isn’t going to die. Or, at least, she hopes she won’t.
This is how my wife’s brain works. You already know how my brain works.
What hope does our child have? He’ll certainly always have the best stories to tell.
